There’s been a huge backlash following Donald Trump’s rally Wednesday night as he continued his days-long attack on four Democratic congresswomen in Greenville, North Carolina, where his supporters chanted, “Send them back!” and “Traitor!” Jaws dropped across the world at the visual and vocal display of racism.
World leaders were appalled. Some Republicans realized that Trump took things too far. One of those Republicans is P.J. Connelly, the Mayor of Greenville where Trump held his rally.
Connelly issued a statement on Thursday stating that he was “extremely disappointed and disheartened” by the chants, which largely targeted Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.).
“I am extremely disappointed and disheartened by the chant that took place at the President’s rally last night,” Connelly said in his statement. “Greenville is more than just a city. It is our home. It is a diverse place — a place of compassion and acceptance. An inclusive place where everyone, regardless of race, religion or political beliefs, is welcome.”
Connelly went on to add that the chants did not reflect Greenville.
“Hate will never have a place in our community,” he said. “The behavior that was on display last night is not reflective of the Greenville I know and love.”
On Thursday, Trump claimed that he disagrees with the “send her back” chants that rang out after he attacked Omar but the president practically wrote the script for the awful chants in his Twitter timeline and in his speech as he viciously railed against “The Squad,” which consists of Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., and Ayanna Pressley, D-Mass. Trump has been trying to paint the women as foreigners who hate this country. However, three of the women were born in the U.S. and Omar came here as a child refugee. In fact, Omar has been living in this country longer than the Third Lady.
CBS reports that Trump even took heat from Melania, Ivanka and Vice President Mike Pence, over the racist chants. I guess they were OK, though, with Trump’s racist tweets.
