While Donald Trump is trying to distract us with appalling decisions, news broke that the former reality show star is closer to losing control of his tax filings. Trump repeatedly promised to release his taxes but after he ‘won’ the election, he defied the modern presidential norm of disclosing them to the public FOR SOME REA$ON.
On Monday, a federal judge in New York, Victor Marrero, rejected an argument from Trump that sitting presidents are immune from criminal investigations and ruled that
a mob boss Trump can’t prevent his accountants, Mazars USA LLP, from turning over his taxes and other financial documents to Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr., according to the New York Times. Vance’s office is investigating whether the Trump Organization falsified business records related to hush-money payments to adult film actress Stormy Daniels, who has said she had a sexual encounter with Trump after his wife gave birth to their son.
Trump’s attorneys are expected to appeal the decision but as it stands now, the Manhattan district attorney’s office is allowed to subpoena eight years of the “president’s” personal and corporate tax returns.
In no uncertain terms, the judge sent a clear message to Trump that he is “not above the law.”
Marrero called Trump’s argument “repugnant to the nation’s governmental structure and constitutional values.” Presidents, their families, and businesses are not above the law, the judge ruled, the Times reports.
“This court cannot endorse such a categorical and limitless assertion of presidential immunity,” Marrero wrote in his ruling. “The expansive notion of constitutional immunity invoked here to shield the president from judicial process would constitute an overreach of executive power.”
IMPORTANT: The New York judge who dismissed Trump’s tax return suit also took a huge swing at the DOJ memos that say a sitting president can’t be indicted. He says the legal weigh given to these OLC opinions is “not warranted.” >>>>> pic.twitter.com/sqH9EWIpZf

File this under ‘things we saw coming’ or ‘how to look like you’re hiding something’:
But moments after the ruling Monday, Trump’s private attorneys asked the New York-based U.S. Court of Appeals for the 2nd Circuit to temporarily put the case on hold.
The decision marked a key setback for Trump, who has taken an unorthodox, aggressive approach to fighting off investigations from prosecutors and congressional committees, who have sought his tax returns and financial documents. He has sued the investigators and the companies they had subpoenaed, including Mazars and two of Trump’s banks.”
Trump is famous for delaying court cases but the articles of impeachment might have just gotten a few pages longer if he doesn’t comply. And we can expect a Twitter-tantrum any minute now with Trump calling the judge part of the Deep State out to undermine his “presidency.”
