Donald Trump has been doubling down on immigration, even shutting the government down as of last night because he can’t get funding for his racist border wall. With that being said, what a member of his own party has just done to oppose him is going to make him have a fit.
It turns out the Michigan Governor Rick Snyder has sent Trump a strong message about how much he disagrees with the unworthy President. Snyder recently pardoned several Iraqi immigrants that Trump was trying to deport over the last year or so, throwing his opposition right in Trump’s face. Defense attorney Bill Swor commented on the matter and said:
We’re ecstatic. These are people who have worked very hard to prove that one mistake does not define their life. We’re grateful for Governor Snyder for recognizing that effort and that achievement and taking the steps to correct it.”
The Iraqi nationals that were saved from deportation were also the lead plaintiffs in the very public lawsuit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), Hamama v. Homan and were affected by Trump’s “travel” ban.
Trump has been trying to deport these individuals for over a year, but his crusade was halted by U.S. District Judge Mark Goldsmith, who issued several rulings that stalled the process. In one opinion Goldsmith said:
Each petitioner faces the risk of torture or death on the basis of residence in America and publicized criminal records. Many will also face persecution as a result of a particular religious affiliation. While cost and efficiency in administering the immigration system are not illegitimate governmental concerns, such interests pale to the point of evaporation when weighed against the potential lethal harm petitioners may suffer.”
The fact that Trumps racism was opposed by a fellow Republican speaks tons for where his presidency is at right now. It’s hard to imagine it could get any worse, but we all know it will.
